The children engage in storytelling, organized games, and free play. A light snack is provided mid-service. Parents are asked to sign children in and out as well as to complete the nursery medical information card to indicate any pre-existing medical conditions and/or allergies. Parents and church members staff the nursery on a rotational basis. Volunteers are needed at all times and are encouraged to join this group of service providers. Interested persons may sign-up in the nursery each Sunday.

The Zion Hill Rites of Passage Program was developed within the context and spirit of the traditional African custom. The programs have been in existence at the church since 1994. The youth in the program are referred to as “Karanding” which means student or learner in Kiswahili. The sessions are conducted by men and women of the church, called Elders, who share their experiences with the youth.
The program is comprised of two groups: “Kentake” for the young females and “Adigun Nkosi” for the young males. Kentake facilitates the transition of African American female youth into womanhood through various experiences and activities. From Ethiopia, the word Kentake conveys the idea of a female advocate, guide and ruler for the family and nation. Adigun Nkosi involves a sequence of planned activities and experiences that teach young African American males the qualities and responsibilities that are required in becoming strong African men. The word Adigun means “righteous” in Yoruba and the word Nkosi means “ruler” in Zulu.
Thirteen sessions address such topics as spirituality, history from the black perspective, self esteem, self discipline, health, sexuality, family and community, careers, goal setting, male/female relationships, nutrition and etiquette. Young people from ages 13 to 18 are encouraged to participate.
